William Faulkner

William Faulkner is a well known American novelist, poet and film screen writer. Well known as an influential writer of the twentieth century, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in the year 1949. William Faulkner had carefully used diction and candace in his works and had an elaborate literary style. He was sometimes considered as the inventor of the well known stream of consiousness technique that is used in fictions. But according to man critics and erudites it is not so. William Faulkner is also one of the most important Southern writers who inluded Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote. He is also known as one of the greatest American Writers.

Early life of William Faulkner
William Faulkner was born William Cuthbert Falkner on 25th September in the year 1897 in New Albany in Mississippi. He was greatly influenced by the state of Mississippi and the history and culture of the southern part of America. He could not join the United States Army because of his heign and therefore joined the Canadian and the Royal Air Force. It is said that, to appear more British at thetime of Joining the Royal Airforce he added an 'u' to his last name.

Works of William Faulkner
William Faulkner started writing in the year 1925. his first novel Soldier's Pay was published in the year. He also penned several famous novels like The Sound and Fury,The Reivers, A Fabel, As I Lay Dying, Absalom, Absalom! And Light in August. He also wrote many short Stories like Red Leaves, A rose for Emily, Dry September and That Evening Sun. he also wrote two volumes of Poetry named The Marble Faun and A Green Bough. He later went to Hollywood to become a screenplay writer. He wrote screenplay for The Big Sleep and To Have and Have Not.

Other works of William Faulkner
William Faulkner donated a portion of his prize Money of Nobel Winning to make a fund that would support and encourage the fiction writers. Later the fun became known as PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction. He also donated another portion to Oxford band for th establishment of an account that would fund the higher education facility of African Americans at a nearby college. He also was the writer in residence at the University of Virginia. William Faulkner died of Heart Attack in the year 1962. he was 64 years old at that time.
