Bill Werbeniuk is one such iconic sports personality who was also a notable drinker. This Canadian snooker player was very much addicted to alcohol and was a prime example of alcohol abuse. Bill Werbeniuk had a pre game ritual where he used to drink ten pints of lager. Later in his career, he was banned from playing snooker as he used Inderal drug to moderate his consumption of alcohol. Well recognized for his girt, he was lovingly called as Big Bill, and was also known as Wobblydick.
Life and career of Bill Werbeniuk
Born on 14th January, 1947, this noted Canadian snooker player had often performed well at the snooker World Championships. He reached the quarter final stage on four occasions. However, he was unable to utilize his full potential primarily because of his drinking exploits. Bill Werbeniuk used to consume plentiful alcohol before and during his snooker matches. He himself has admitted that he consumed six pints of lager before the start of a snooker match, and one pint for every frame. He further said that he used to do this to counter essential tremor. In the later part of his career, he also started taking propranolol, a noted beta blocker. Few sources say that Bill Werbeniuk took it tom counter tremor, while few others say that he consumed it to deal with the effects of his generous consumption of alcohol on his heart.
A memorable occurrence took place during a World Championship Match with Dennis Taylor that was televised. When Bill Werbeniuk tried to stretch over the table, he broke wind with a loud sound and as everyone started laughing he turned around and said: “Who did that?”
In his professional snooker career, Bill Werbeniuk came up to the rank of eight in the year 1983. His last professional match was played in the year 1990, and in the year 1991, an order of bankruptcy was brought against him. In the later period of his life, he got himself involved in playing professional pool. This noted snooker player met with achievements as a professional snooker player and he was also very noted as a drinking icon. Bill Werbeniuk passed away on 20th January, in the year 2003.
