There are many Sports persons who were iconic drinkers. These iconic drinkers had not only made a name for them in the arena of sports, but were also known for their penchant for hard drinks. Sports persons who were reputed drinkers belong to a variety of sports. Some were footballers, some cricketers, some wrestlers, some tennis players, and various other sports. Some of the noted sports persons who were iconic drinkers include George Best, David Boon, Alex Higgins, Andre the Giant, Bill Werbeniuk, and Wade Boggs.

George Best: He was one of the most noted sports persons who were iconic drinkers. This famous northern Irish footballer was a high profile drinker and womanizer. This image of his made him perhaps the first footballer who became more of a celebrity. At one point of time in his life, he was known more for his off field histrionics than his on field activities. Many believe that because of his addiction to alcohol, he could not realize his full potential as a footballer and as a sportsman. All the contradictions of Best's life are wittily summed up in the often quoted anecdote that said a bellboy, seeing Best with Mary Stavin in bed, with a champagne and cash won from gambling, exclaimed, “George, where did it all go wrong?”

David Boon: This Australian cricketer is well known for his cricketing skills as well as his addiction to alcohol. It has been reported that David Boon had consumed 52 cans of beer while on a flight from Sydney to London before Australia's winning tour of Ashes. Besides being a prolific batsman, David Boon was a notorious drinker.

Alex Higgins: This sports personality is also one of the noted sports persons who were iconic drinkers. This northern Irish snooker player faced decline in his sports career primarily due to his addiction to alcohol. By his knack for drinking, he made a name due to all the wrong reasons.

Bill Werbeniuk: Bill Werbeniuk is a noted Canadian snooker player. Besides in playing skills he also also an iconic drinker. Before every game, he used to drink ten pints of lager. It almost became a pre-match ritual for him.

Andre the Giant: He is a famous wrestling personality and he ruled the ring for a number of years. This professional wrestler from France was also an iconic drinker.

All these sports persons who were iconic drinkers have led a life very much dependent on booze.
