Thomas Alan Waits, also popularly known as Tom Waits, is a popular American singer, songwriter, composer and actor. Truly a versatile man, Tom Waits has been able to leave marks in all the fields where he tried his hand out. Born on December 7, 1949, Tom Waits, with his trademark growl, is known for his tendency of experimentation with his work. He incorporated pre-rock styles like blues, jazz and Vaudeville, and experimented with all those.

Tom Waits has been successful in building up a distinctive musical persona. The lyrics of Tom Waits are known fro atmospheric portrayals of bizarre, and seedy characters. Also composed in various movies and musical plays, Tom Waits has been equally successful as a supporting actors in films. With a number of popular films in his kitty including The Fisher King, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Short Cuts, Tom Waits has also been nominated for Academy Award for his outstanding performance in soundtrack work. A highly successful professional though, Tom Waits has sadly been addicted to alcohol. He is also known for the fact, which is also causing problem in his professional career too.

The Early Days
Born at Pomona in California, United States, Tom Waits was the son of the school teacher duo, Jesse Frank Waits and Alma Johnson McMurray. When Tom Waits was ten years old, his parents got divorced in 1960. Tom was at Jordan Elementary School in Whittier, California then. Later on, he moved with his mother to National City, near the Mexican border in 1960. Since his childhood days, Tom Waits started learning piano. While attending Hilltop High School, Tom Waits started playing in an R&B soul band called The System. He also started working at Napoleone Pizza House in San Diego. Tom Waits was huge fan of several famous writers and musicians including Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Lord Buckley, Hoagy Carmichael, Marty Robbins, Raymond Chandler, Stephen Foster etc. He also started developing his own music style combing song and monologue.

The Career
Tom Waits signed with Herb Cohen when he was twenty one years old. During August to December 1971, Tom Waits made a series of demo recordings for Cohen, of which many became famous later when those were released twenty years after on “The Early Years”, Volume One and Volume Two. Tom Waits also signed to Asylum Records in 1972. His Closing Time was released in 1973, which got warm reviews. He also released various other albums later on. He also acted in several films as well.
