Tallulah Bankhead was a famous American actress, besides being a host of a talk show and bonne vivante. Tallulah Bankhead was also an iconic drinker. She was well known in the world for her drinking habits. Tallulah Brockman Bankhead was born on 31st January, 1902. She achieved fame at quite a young age, as early as fifteen. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, her parents were William Brockman Bankhead and Adelaide Eugenia Sledge. Belonging to a powerful political family, she was very much the center of attraction within her family. Belonging to an elite society, she exercised the influence of her family to land a part in the Broadway show Squab Farm in the year 1918.
Her Career
Tallulah Bankhead tried her luck in films, and then played major roles in several plays like 39 East, Danger, Footloose, and Her Temporary Husband, and developed parts in The Exciters and Nice People. When her career became stagnant for a while, she moved to England and for a period of eleven years, she played significant roles. Some of her ventures include Dark Victory, Forsaking All Others, Rain, and Something Gray. However, her ultimate success came in the year 1937 for her role as the Queen of the Nile by in Antony and Cleopatra. It followed with some of her scintillating performances in The Little Foxes, Private Lives, The Skin of Our Teeth, etc.
In the later part of her career, Tallulah Bankhead, acted in Foolish Notion, The Eagle Has Two Heads, Dear Charles, Midgie Purvis, and The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore. She took to alcohol drinking primarily out of frustration of not having tasted success the way she wanted. Tallulah Bankhead became known for her capability of drinking a bottle of bourbon within a period of thirty minutes. Even her last words were “codeine, bourbon”.
Besides being a celluloid personality, she was also very famous among the television audience and theater audience. Her penchant for drinking, however, had a very harmful effect on her professional as well as personal life. This famous personality had an intriguing nature and was also very fun loving. She had an incredible memory and was able to memorize scripts in no time at all. This witty personality was undoubtedly a great entertainer. However, she became famous more as an iconic drinker than a very fine actress. In the year 1968, Tallulah Bankhead passed away, falling sick to double pneumonia.
