About Shane MacGowan
Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan, also popularly known as Shane MacGowan, is an English-born Irish songwriter. Born on December 25, 1957, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in United Kingdom, Shane MacGowan is known as the original singer and songwriter of The Pogues. He produced a number of songs that became pretty popular. Many of his songs are influenced by Irish nationalism and the history of the nation, the experience of the Irish in London and the United States. The writings of Shane MacGowan also reflects the life in London as well. One can also notice clear influence of the 19th century Irish poet James Clarence Mangan and playwright Brendan Behan in his writing. Besides his writing, Shane MacGowan was also known for his drinking habits and his self-destructive behavior. He was also a controversial character who was convicted with possession of drugs. The Early Days
Shane MacGowan was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, in a Irish family. Soon after his birth, Shane MacGowan was brought to Ireland where he spent six years in her mother's family home in Carney, near Nenagh, County Tipperary. Despite the fact that Shane MacGowan spent his early childhood in Ireland, he developed a North London accent. In Ireland, Shane MacGowan completely immersed in traditional Irish music. As his mother was a singer and traditional dancer, and his father was in literature and writing, Shane MacGowan was brought up in an environment from where he could learn the art of literature as well as music. His background had helped him to become a successful songwriter in the future. In 1971, Shane MacGowan earned a musical scholarship and was accepted into a well-known English public school, Westminster School, but he was expelled in his second year due to his possession of drugs.
The Career
Shane MacGowan has a colorful career which grew with The Pogues. He came into the fame with his one of the most well-known songs “Fairytale of New York” which he performed with Kirsty MacColl in 1987. But later on, due to his unprofessional behavior, The Pogues threw Shane MacGowan out of the band. He then formed a new band, called Shane MacGowan and The Popes. The Pogues and Shane MacGowan re-formed in 2001 for a sell-out tours, and later again in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 for further tours.
Shane MacGowan and Alcohol
Shane MacGowan was known for his addiction to alcohol. In fact, he was known for his self-destructive behavior. Once the popular Irish singer Sinead O'Connor reported Shane MacGowan to the police in London for the possession of drug. He started drinking alcohol at the age of only four. Shane MacGowan also had to suffer physically for bing drinking. He was also notorious for performing while drunk.
