There are many famous personalities in the world noted for their talent as well as their penchant for alcohol. Serge Gainsbourg is one such personality. Serge Gainsbourg (2nd April 1928 to 2nd March 1991) was a famous French singer, songwriter, poet, director and actor. He was so versatile that it was hard to categorize him under a particular head. Though he was extremely famous in his own country France, he had to wait a while to achieve success on the international stage. It was only in the year 1979 that he got his first No. 1 album, Aux Armes et caetera. From then on, he had firmly established his musical legacy.

Born in Paris, France, as Lucien Ginsburg, his parents were Russian Jewish who were forced to flee France after the Bolshevik uprising in the year 1917. He had to spend a traumatic childhood as France was occupied by Nazi Germany and the Jews had to flee. After becoming a disillusioned painter even before he reached the age of thirty years, he started earning his livelihood as a piano player in various bars. When he was 36 years old, he married English actress and singer Jane Birkin who was only 19 years old. Later they separated and Birkin remarried.

Life and career of Serge Gainsbourg
Most of the early works of Serge Gainsbourg were shaped by the influence of Boris Vian, and were traditional chanson. Quite soon he started moving to other musical genres and tried his hands in various styles, namely, jazz, pop, reggae, electronica and hip hop. His creativity was appreciated world over, and in the 1980s he became one of the most popular figures in the international musical scene. Several songs of Serge Gainsbourg had morbid themes with sexual connotations. Some of his early songs that became popular were “Le Poinconneur des Lilas” and “poupee de cire, poupee de son”. He performed in various places in France as well as in Europe and America. His popularity soared and he performed in front of packed audiences.
