About Oliver Reed
Oliver Reed was a popular English actor, known for his strapping screen appearance. Born on February 13, 1938, Oliver Reed successfully transformed his real-life macho image to the reel-life and played various 'tough-guy' roles in a number of films. Oliver Reed worked in a range of films in his entire career some of which became very popular among the viewers. Some of his popular films include Oliver!, Women in Love, The Three Musketeers, The Trap, Hannibal Brooks, The Prince And The Pauper, The Triple Echo, Castaway, Sitting Target, Tommy, The Devils, and Gladiator. Though Oliver Reed was pretty successful in his career, though he was badly addicted with alcohol. He was known for this affection towards alcohol as well. He even had to suffer a lot for this in his entire life for this.
The Early Days
Born in Wimbledon, London, Oliver Reed was the son of Peter Reed, the sports journalist and Marcia. The film director Sir Carol Reed was his uncle and the actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree was his grandfather. As Oliver Reed got the environment of acting in his family since the childhood, it helped him a lot to become an actor in the future. Before finally going to the world of acting, Oliver Reed was also in the British Army as well.
The Career
Oliver Reed started his as an extra in the films in the late 1950s. He didn't have any formal acting training, nor he had any theatrical experience. He appeared in The Square Peg in 1958 and again in the classic comedy The Bulldog Breed in 1960. Oliver Reed got his first big break in the film Sword of Sherwood Forest in 1960 which earned him a lot of fame and recognition. After that he, acted in a few films where he left showed his talent and left his mark. The films like Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960), Captain Clegg (1962), Pirates of Blood River (1962), and The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) were the notable ones where Oliver Reed acted. Later on, Oliver Reed also acted on various other films like Paranoiac and The Damned (1963), The System (1964), The Brigand of Kandahar (1965) etc.
Oliver Reed and the Alcohol
Despite his successful career, Oliver Reed, an iconic drinker, was addicted to alcohol very badly. Alcohol almost ruined his life. He was a heavy drinker. He once admitted that he drank 106 pints of beer on a 2-day binge. He was also involved in various bar fights. Alcohol even cut short his film career. Oliver Reed finally died on May 2, 1999.
