Life and career
After arriving at South Australia's Adelaide, his parents divorced and his mother remarried. Barnes is the surname of his mother's second husband. Though he started his life as an iron smelter, the love for music soon took over and he joined a band. Soon after he joined a rock band named Orange, having guitarist Ian Moss, songwriter and organist Don Walker, bass player Les Kaczmarek, and drummer Steve Prestwich. Within a quick span of time they renamed the band Cold Chisel. They gradually became very popular and became a prominent entity on the local music arena. A volatile relationship with the band often lead to his quitting of the band. In May 1977, when he decided move on and give a last performance with Cold Chisel, he had to alter his plan as the performance was immensely successful. Within a month Cold Chisel signed a contract with WEA.
By the year 1980, the band emerged as the most popular band in the country of Australia. But, along with the band's popularity rose the fame of Jimmy Barnes as a notorious drinker. He was reported to have over two bottles of vodka per day. He used to drink while performing and most of his performances were carried out in a state of high intoxication. Besides being a notorious drinker, Jimmy Barnes was also considered to be a womanizer. He gave up drinking in 2002.
