Dino Paul Crocetti, popularly known as Dean Martin, was a popular Italian-American singer, film actor, and comedian. Born on June 7, 1971, Dean Martin was one of the most famous music artists during the 1950s and 1960s who consistently produced a series of hit songs including “Memories Are Made Of This”, “Mambo Italiano”, “That's Amore”, “Sway”, “Everybody Loves Somebody”, “Ain't That Kick in the Head” etc. Dean Martin was the king of the show business in his time. He scripted his success in four major areas of show business including concert stage, recordings, motion pictures, and television. Dean Martin was a multi-talented star who earned lot of fame and success throughout his life. But, like many others, this talent artists too have weakness for drinking. He was known for his excessive drinking habit. And this iconic drinker also suffered a lot for this.
The Early Days
Dean Martin was born in Steubenville, Ohio in the Pittsburgh Tri-State region. Son of Gaetano Crocetti, barber from Italy and Angela Barra, an Italian-American, Dean Martin had the influence of Italy and used to speak only Italian until the age of five. He dropped out of school at the tenth grade as he thought that he was smarter than the teachers. He started playing boxing. During his boxing days, Dean Martin broke his nose, had many sets of broken knuckles, and permanently split his lip. Later on, Dean Martin gave up boxing and started working in an illegal casino. At the same time, he also started singing with local bands. Dean Martin got his first break in working for the Ernie McKay Orchestra. In the early 1940s, he started singing for the band leader Sammy Watkins, and changed his name to Dean Martin as suggested by Sammy.
The Career
Dean Martin had a colorful career graph. He became quite successful as an actor as well as a singer. Also known for his commedy, Dean Martin wanted to become a real actor. In 1957, he co-starred in the war drama The Young Lions because he wanted to learn from Marlon Brando and Montgomery Cliff. Dean Martin also starred in Some Came Running which became very popular and got appreciated by a lot of people. By the mid 1960s, Dean Martin became a top movie, and recording artist. He was a crowed puller and was always in the middle of attractions wherever he used to go. Dean Martin also performed in various comedy role like Kiss Me, Stupid (1964). He also acted in many other films.
As a singer, Dean Martin copied the style of Bing Crosby and Perry Como, before he finally found his own style. Though he couldn't read music, he recorded more than 100 albums and 600 songs.
