Stroke

Stroke is a critical situation, which occurs when blood flow to your brain stops. A stroke takes place suddenly. As soon as blood flow stops to our brain, the cells of the brain begin to die. The two forms of strokes, ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke occur.
Ischemic stroke occurs when blood clot blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. The hemorrhagic stroke is caused when a blood vessel breaks and bleeds into the brain. Sometimes when the blood supply to the brain is briefly interrupted then the mini-strokes occur. The symptoms of Stroke are, trouble in speaking or understanding speech, sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, severe headache, trouble in walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination etc.

A stroke occurs suddenly. It affects the brain the symptoms of Stroke depend on which location of the brain has been damaged. The brain gets damaged as the blood supply suddenly stops to the brain and the brain cells do not get enough oxygen and other nutrients. As a result the brain cells begin to die.

The effects of stroke can be both physical and mental. The common effects of Stroke are, weakness or change in sensation in one side of the body, loss or troubled vision in one or both eyes, difficulties in swallowing, slurring of speech or difficulties in using the correct words.

The persons, who have already had a stroke, are more prone to get strokes in future. Some of the risk factors for Stroke are, Smoking, Blood Pressure , Cholesterol and Lipid Profile, Diabetes, Alchohol, Weight, Atrial Fibrillation, Oral Contraceptions etc.

One of the prime causes of Stroke is, Alchohol. Taking too much alchohol raises the blood pressure and this increases the risk of getting strokes. The safe limit of taking alchohol according to the guidelines provided by the government allow 28 units a week for men and 21 units a week for women. According to the other Health Education Groups it is 21 units for men and 14 for women. The persons who have the risk of high blood pressure are advised to avoid taking alchohol. The people should be aware of the risk of indulging in too much alchohol as this can lead to serious health problems later. The women who take moderate amount of alchohol get 30 percent higher risk of breast cancer than non-drinkers. The women who consume two or more alchoholic drinks everyday, are considered at a greater risk.

To avoid Stroke it is advised to keep your blood pressure under control from the beginning. Get your blood pressure checked regularly to ensure that it is normal. Once you feel it is getting higher start taking preventive measures at an initial stage and avoid severe problems in future. High blood pressure leads to the damage of blood cells, which in turn damage the brain, and causes stroke. Avoid high blood pressure and to do that be careful of the amount of salt in your diet, reduce the amount of salt to keep the pressure normal.
